Perils of International Expansion 国際化の危険

There have always been evidences against the diversification by firms.  Now an evidence concerning law firms against international expansion (ie, geographical diversification).  According to the Economist, as law firms increase the ratio of lawyers stationed abroad, their profit per equity partner decreases.  Diversification of all sorts creates increased information processing load for the organisation and its managers, and easily surpasses their information processing capacity, resulting in poor and/or delayed decisions.  Focusing seems to make sense here as well.

企業の多角化を否とする証拠は常に存在するが、今回は、法律事務所の国際化（＝地理的多角化）を否とする証拠が紹介された。『エコノミスト』誌によると、法律事務所が海外駐在の弁護士の割合を増加させるにつれ、（所有権を持つ）パートナー1人当たりの利益は減少する。多角化というものは、組織とマネジャーに対する情報処理負荷を増加させ、彼らの情報処理能力を超えてしまいがちとなる。そうなると、意思決定の遅れや間違いが発生する。ここでも、集中はペイする戦略のようだ。
